Questions that apply to every build

Cost, sourcing, cooling, ordering and support — the answers that do not change with the kit. Anything specific to a kit lives on its own page above.

Before you buy

What does a complete conversion actually cost?

The kit is one line on a bigger invoice and we would rather you knew that up front. A stock 8HP70 or 8HP75 swap lands around $4,000–5,000 minimum excluding install labour; with upgrades it runs $6,000–10,000 and beyond. A Ford 6R80 build is roughly $3,500–5,000. A 6HP28 diesel build is about $3,500–4,000 rear-wheel drive, $3,700–4,500 all-wheel drive.

Those are total project figures — adapter kit, the transmission itself, controller and harness, fluid, service parts, coding and tuning.

What else do I need besides the kit?

The transmission, a controller and harness (unless you are on the stock-TCU 6HP28 path), around three gallons of a Group IV synthetic ATF, and service parts — pan and filter, mechatronic connector seal, input seal. Then coding, tuning and labour.

We sell almost all of it. Where a piece is cheaper somewhere else, we will tell you that rather than quietly sell it to you.

Can you help me find a transmission?

Yes, and it is free. We vet donor units — auction and sale history, mileage, yard reviews — and hand you the options worth pursuing. Car-Part, eBay and LKQ are the usual sources.

Always get a receipt, confirm the return policy, and prefer local if you can. Freight prefers a business or terminal address with a dock. Buy one to three weeks before install and inspect it inside the seller's 30-day return window, not the night before the car goes on the lift.

Do you need my VIN?

For your own car, usually only part of it. On a BMW the first seven characters are enough to decode what we need; other makes can need more or less, and we will tell you exactly which part to send.

For a donor transmission we are vetting, send the full VIN of the vehicle it came out of. That is how we pull the vehicle history report — mileage, service, location, damage — and judge whether the unit is worth buying.

Does an all-wheel-drive build cost more?

Not for the kit — our AWD and RWD kit prices are deliberately the same. The wider project costs more because it needs more parts around it, but we do not charge you extra for the adapter kit on that basis.

How much power will these transmissions hold?

Stock cores commonly handle 600–800 lb-ft. Built units with upgraded clutch packs and billet internals go past 1000 lb-ft, with proven seven- and eight-second quarter-mile passes behind them.

Factory torque ratings: 8HP70 516 lb-ft · 8HP75 551 · 8HP76 560 · 8HP90 664 · 8HP95 700 · 6HP28 516 · 6R80 590.

Cooling

Can I keep the factory transmission cooler?

The OE cooler is neither recommended nor compatible, which is why the kit includes the delete hardware rather than treating it as an upgrade. Run an AN cooler core with an inline thermostat instead — our suggestion for most builds is a 19-row core ahead of the radiator with a 165 °F thermostat.

The kit covers the transmission end: the cooler adapter, an 8AN PTFE line kit with fittings, reducers, and the block-off for the OE cooler.

How do I know which cooler adapter I need?

By measuring the port, not by reading it off the transmission model. Six engines wear more than one port depending on the transmission behind them, so the model number genuinely cannot answer it.

The names are caliper readings on the port itself: 18.5 mm and 17 mm are bore seals — a plain round bore, O-ring sealing radially against the wall. 14 mm and 12 mm are face seals — a stepped port replicating the OEM formed hardline tip, with the O-ring squeezed axially against a machined face by the retaining bracket. You can tell the two families apart at a glance.

Not sure? Send a photo with a caliper on it. That takes us two minutes and saves you a return.

What comes with a cooler adapter?

Complete. Billet CNC body, port O-rings, mounting hardware, ending in two ORB8 female ports. There is no bare version of this part.

What you choose is which ORB8-to-AN male fitting arrives pre-installed — 6AN, 8AN or 10AN — or leaving the ports open if you already run your own ORB8 fittings. Open ports are a legitimate choice, not a downgrade. The mount bolt is never something you pick; the right hardware ships either way.

Ordering and support

How does shipping work?

UPS Ground, fully insured, free to the 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C. Most orders ship within one to three business days.

Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, international and expedited shipping are quoted on request — email us before ordering. Texas orders add 8.25% sales tax. Full details are in our shipping policy.

What is your return policy?

30-day returns by request — email us before sending anything back. You pay return shipping and there is a 10% restocking fee on returns and cancellations. Everything is inspected before a refund is issued.

We reserve the right to deny or reduce a refund for damage, missing components, signs of installation or use, or a late return — but we would far rather stop a wrong part leaving in the first place, which is what the pre-purchase consult is for. Full details are in our refund policy.

What support do I get after I buy?

A-to-Z project support, whether you are installing it yourself or handing it to a shop. That is not a marketing line — it is the reason most of our business arrives by word of mouth rather than by advertising.

Do you publish install instructions?

Printed instructions ship with the products that have them, and per-product guides are linked from their listings. We are steadily building out a full illustrated guide library with per-face diagrams — it is the biggest gap in our documentation and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

In the meantime, ask. Install support is included either way.
